The White House is the official home and office that the Presidents of the United States use. It is situated at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., Columbia. It has been the home of each U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. “White House” is a term used to describe the residence of presidents since 1800. “White House” is often used to refer to the president and his advisors.
An Irish native architectural designer James Hoban designed the residence built in the neoclassical style. Hoban designed the house after Leinster House in Dublin, the building which today houses the Oireachtas, which is the Irish legislative body. The building was constructed in 1792- 1800, employing Aquia Creek sandstone painted white. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the mansion in 1801, the architect (with the architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) added low colonnades in each wing, which concealed the stables and storage. In 1814 during the War of 1812, the mansion was set on fire at the hands of the British Army during the Burning of Washington, destroying the house’s interior and burning much on the outside. The reconstruction began instantly, and President James Monroe moved into the partially rebuilt Executive Residence in October 1817. The exterior work continued with the construction of the semi-circular South portico by 1824 and the North entrance in 1829.
Due to the crowded executive mansion, president Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices moved to the newly-constructed West Wing in 1901. In 1909 president William Howard Taft expanded the West Wing and created the first Oval Office, which was later moved when the building was extended. The Mansion’s main building (Executive Residence), the third-floor attic was transformed into a living area in 1927 after the hip roof was expanded by constructing large sheds with dormers. The newly built East Wing was a reception space for social gatherings. Jefferson’s colonnades joined the two wings. The East Wing alterations were completed in 1946, creating an additional office space. By 1948, the home’s wooden beams and load-bearing walls were nearing failure. Then, under Harry S. Truman, the interior rooms were removed, and a brand new steel frame that was load-bearing was built inside the walls. The exterior was also remodeled, and Truman Balcony was constructed. The contemporary White House complex includes the Executive Residence, the West Wing and The East Wing, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (the former State Department, which now is home to offices for the president’s and vice-presidents’ staff), and Blair House, a guest residence. The Executive Residence is comprised of six floors. The ground floor, the State Floor, the Second Floor, and the Third Floor, in addition to the basement, are two stories high. The house is a National Heritage Site owned by the National Park Service and is part of the President’s Park. The park was placed 2nd on the American Institute of Architects’ list of “America’s Favorite Architecture.”
