Library of Congress

The Library of Congress (LC) is the library for research that is a part of the United States Congress members and is the actual National Library of the United States. It is the longest-running federal institution of culture in the United States. The library is housed in three buildings on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.,  and has a conservation center in Culpeper, Virginia. Its Librarian of Congress oversees the library’s activities, while it is the Architect for the Capitol and maintains its buildings. The Library of Congress is one of the most extensive libraries around the globe. The Library of Congress’s “collections are universal, not limited by subject, format, or national boundary, and include research materials from all parts of the world and in more than 470 languages.” Congress relocated from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., Columbia in 1800, after having sessions for 11 years in temporary capitals of the nation located in New York City and Philadelphia. In both cities, Congress members in Congress of the U.S. Congress had access to the vast collections of the New York Society Library and the Library Company of Philadelphia. The tiny Congressional Library has been housed in the United States Capitol for most of the 19th century up to the beginning of the 1890s.

The majority of the collection was burned in the hands of The British in the War of 1812, with the library starting efforts to rebuild its collection in 1815. The library acquired the entire Thomas Jefferson personal library of 6,487 books. It slowly was enlarged over the years, even though another fire hit it in the Capitol chambers in 1851. It destroyed much of the collection, including many of Jefferson’s works. Following the American Civil War, the importance of the Library of Congress increased with its expansion, and there was a push to buy new copies of burned books. The library gained the right to transfer copyrighted work to store two copies of the books, maps, illustrations, diagrams, and other documents published within the United States. It also began to expand its collection. The development of the library culminated in 1888-1894 when it built its colossal library just across the street from the Capitol. Two other buildings were constructed in the vicinity to store collections and offer services, one in the 1930s and the other in the 1970s. EZ Bed Bug Exterminator Washington DC

The library’s primary goal is to answer research questions from members of Congress and executed by the Congressional Research Service. It also manages and houses the United States Copyright Office. The library is accessible to all for research purposes, but only library staff and government officials are allowed to check out (i.e., get off the premises) materials and books.
