Navy Yard, also known as Near Southeast, is a neighborhood along the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington, D.C. Navy Yard is bordered by Interstate 695 to the east and north, South Capitol Street to the west, and south, and the Anacostia River to the south. Most of the space (south of M Street, SE) is home to Washington Navy Yard. Washington Navy Yard (including the Naval Historical Center) is the reason for the neighborhood’s name. The neighborhood is situated within D.C.’s Ward 6, which Charles Allen represents. Navy Yard – Ballpark Metro station provides this neighborhood’s service on the Green Line.
History
The historical background of historically Anacostia River was once a deep-water canal with natural resources and was the home of Nacotchtank Indians. Nacotchtank Indians. In 1791, Pierre Charles L’Enfant designed the design to build Washington, D.C, Columbia and, after recognizing the potential of the Anacostia River, located the city’s new commercial center and wharves. In 1799, the Washington Navy Yard was established in the vicinity. It was the largest naval shipbuilding plant for several years. Today, the Washington Navy Yard is the U.S. Navy’s longest-running federal facility. Navy Yard was Washington’s earliest industrial area. One of the first industrial structures included the 8-story brick Sugar House, built-in Square 744, located at the foot of New Jersey Avenue SE as a sugar refinery between 1797 and 1798. It was renamed in 1805 and was transformed into The Washington Brewery, which produced beer up until 1836. The site of the brewery was located west of the Washington City Canal. Washington City Canal in Parking Lot H/I is located in the block between Nationals Park and the historic DC Water pumping station.
