On the east side, the east of Capitol Hill lies the Anacostia River, and to the north, it is located the H Street corridor; to the south is the Southeast/Southwest Freeway as well as The Washington Navy Yard, and to the west is Washington Navy Yard and the Southeast/Southwest Freeway, to the west is National Mall and the city’s central business district. Capitol Hill landmarks include the United States Capitol and the Senate and House offices, the Supreme Court building, the Library of Congress, the Marine Barracks, the Washington Navy Yard, and Congressional Cemetery.
However, it is an urban residential area of rowhouses with different styles and times. Side by side, there are early 19th-century manor homes, Federal townhouses, small frame houses, extravagant Italianate bracketed houses, and the 19th-century rowhouses constructed of press bricks, with their often comical decorative elements that blend Richardsonian Romanesque, Queen Anne, and Eastlakian designs. In the late 1990s, the rise of gentrification and the growing economic growth within the District of Columbia meant that the district’s old and non-historic structures began to be replaced. New constructions that comply with height limits and other limitations are typically designed in a contemporary decorative style created by Amy Weinstein. The designs are characterized by multi-colored brickwork that is set in relief.
